7 Best Warm-Up Exercises Before Running & Cool-Down Routine
Never skip your warm-up! Learn the 7 essential dynamic warm-up exercises before running and post-run cool-down stretches to stay injury-free.

Essential Dynamic Warm-Up and Cool-Down Exercises Before and After Running
Sprinting straight out the door with cold muscles is one of the fastest ways to pull a hamstring or strain a calf (Halodoc). Performing warm-up exercises before running using dynamic movements prepares your joints and nervous system for impact, while static stretching should be saved for your post-run cool-down.
5 Dynamic Warm-Up Exercises Before Running (5–7 Minutes)
- Forward & Lateral Leg Swings (15 reps per leg): Hold onto a tree or bench and swing one leg forward and back, then side to side, to loosen tight hip flexors.
- Walking Lunges (10 reps per leg): Activates your glutes, quads, and core stability before your first stride.
- High Knees (20 seconds): Drives blood flow to hip flexors and primes quick foot turnover.
- Butt Kicks (20 seconds): Dynamically warms up your hamstrings and knee joints.
- Ankle Bounces & Calf Raises (15 reps): Prepares your Achilles tendons and calves for road impact.
Static Cool-Down Stretches After Running (5 Minutes)
After finishing your run, walk for 3 minutes until your heart rate drops, then hold each static stretch for 20–30 seconds:
- Standing Quad Stretch: Gently pull your heel toward your glutes while keeping knees aligned.
- Wall Calf & Achilles Stretch: Lean against a wall or post with one heel pressed flat into the pavement.
